Split:
Split is busy and big (it's Croatia's second largest city) but it remains one of the Adriatic's most fascinating ports with a long and eventful history. There are great sights to see in Split and great places to stay from hotels to private accommodation. Split offers a wealth of museums and Roman ruins under a dramatic mountain backdrop and opens onto a vast expanse of sea.
Obviously, the most important sight is big Diocletian's palace. Get a locally published guide in English which describes this monument in great detail. On the eastern side of the Peristyle is a cathedral, which is the symbol of the city (Sv. Duje). On the western side is the "People's Square" (Narodni trg) with the old town hall which was built in the 15th century. There is an Ethnographic museum on the square (worth visiting) and nearby is a city museum.
